Project #9 : Shirred Dress Untuk Budak 3-4 tahun

Aku ada dengar pasal teknik shirring ni, senang katanya.. so, cuba2 la experimen. Guna kain kapas (Misaki Cotton) dan jahit baju budak berumur 3-4 tahun. Sayangnya masa guna tracing paper, bekas tu tak hilang. Maka baju ni akan aku simpan untuk anak aku di masa hadapan... takkan nak jual baju reject.. ish ish... Aku rasa baju ni tak susah nak buat dan tak panas.. kain kapas, tak berlengan dan comel. Tapi mungkin agak ringkas. Nanti aku fikirkan macam mana nak olah biar lebih comel.

Project #8 : Baju Ketiga, Kurung Kedah

Setelah bertungkus lumus menjahit blaus berkolar lurus, kali ni santai sikit menjahit baju kurung kedah. Terus terang aku katakan, bila dah menjahit blaus berkolar lurus.. jahit baju kurung kedah ni rasa santai yang teramat sangat. Ni pun ada kemalangan sikit, betul2 giliran aku jahit tepi baju ni.. mesin jahit tepi tu habis benang .. basi dah dimakan (kena potong mesin tu).. tapi jahit tepinya tak jadi. Cikgu Zuraidah pun tolong tukarkan benang baru tapi tak boleh gak (benang sepatutnya tak ada masa tu).. maka, dua kali kain aku kena makan. Pulak tu kat sambungan badan ke tangan yang berbasi 1/2 inci.. bila hantar kedai.. dah takde basi dah.. maka, terpaksala jahit kedalam sikit. Nasib baik baju kedah, bahu kat bawah sikit.

Project #7 : Baju Kedua Kelas Jahitan!

Diam tak diam ambik masa sebulan jugak nak siapkan satu baju, yela... kelas seminggu sekali dan aku ni pulak bila buat pola memang perlahan sikit.. takut sangat silap. Semangat nak buat baju kedua! Blaus Berkolar Lurus. Nak buat pola tu tak de susah mana, macam buat blaus kolar bulat cuma cara gunting kain lain sikit. Tetapi, bila nak jahit sambung kolar ke badan... @.@ berpinar mata.. jahit sini sampai sekian lepas tu jahit situ sampai sekian... kalau aku nak jahit baju ni lagi kena baca buku tu balik dari A sampai Z. Ni la dia hasil yang siap itu..

Yer, makcik dah bolat.. hahahahaha ..

Project #6 : Kelas Menjahit! Baju Pertama!

Setelah sekian lama terperap di rumah selepas menjalani pembedahan dan berhenti kerja.. aku dok fikir apa nak buat lepas ni...

Nak cari kerja baru? Tua2 begini? Leceh dan malas........ aku nak kerja sendiri! Cari punya cari, aku buat keputusan untuk ambil kelas menjahit. Kenapa aku tak belajar dari dulu? SEGAN. Kenapa aku tak ambik kursus fashion design masa muda2 dulu? TAK RETI MELUKIS. Memang aku hampeh tang melukis.. malu bila tengok. Adala beberapa cubaan dulu2..takde yang perfect.. boleh dipakai tapi.. ishh.. x cukup cantik jahitannya.. tak kemas. So, aku pun survey2.. jumpa PUSAT JAHITAN & SENIREKA CEMERLANG ( http://kelas-jahitan.blogspot.com/ ). Mula2 takut gak, manala tau mahal.. tapi bila call, takde mahal sangat.. RM160 sebulan, anggaran 3-4 bulan untuk 10 jenis baju (aku amik JahitanPakaian Wanita).

Luckily aku dah berjinak2 sikit dengan seni jahitan, (ceh.. seni konon..) :P .. so, adala baca pasal buat pattern, ukuran tapi tak tau exactly macam mana. So, pergi kelas dia ajar step by step. Bagus! Itu yang makcik suka. 1st baju, blaus kolar bulat. Straight cut, simple dan takde dart. Heh, baju 1st aku dah wat silap jahit leher.. tetas dan gunting, buat pola baru untuk leher.. haha

Dan jeng jeng..Ni la baju pertamaku..

Nampak cantik kat penyidai kan? Kalau warna gambar ni dgn yang bawah ni lain sebab kamera lain.. Atas ni guna nokia.. bawah ni guna Xperia Ray. Kenapa aku pilih fabrik tu? Entah.. tengok macam cantik, bila jadi baju.. @.@ ...

Flower Dress Project #2 Modelled..

Ah, here it is the flower dress I made for Project #2.. It is kinda big for her but I have a feeling it will last for quite sometime :)

Project #5: Hooded Shirt for 6 yrs old

Another experiment I tried was a hooded shirt for a 6 yrs old cousin of mine. The actual pattern is actually a long sleeve shirt with zipper, but I decided to tweak it a bit according to the weather nowadays. It took around 2 days (1 day tracing pattern, cutting cloth and sending it to for serged seam and another day for combining everything). I have to say I am proud of the final product though I did screw up the hood a bit.

Project #4: Tunic for 11 yrs old

After more than a month of hiatus, I started back the journey for better stitch! I decided to make a tunic for my 11 yrs old cousin (the sister of the other girl I made the cute dress). Seems it wasn't fair for me to experiment making cute dress for the little sister and not her other sibling. I decided to make a simple tunic which suits the weather these days, sleeveless and simple cotton fabric. It took just a day to finish up. This is the finish product :).. I made a simple butterfly design on the front, but it doesn't show on the picture..oh my.

-Hiatus-

Well, I haven't been writing or sewing for that matter for a while now due to being bedridden for quite sometime now. I was diagnosed with bilateral ovary cyst end of May and had to undergo surgery earlier this month. It was sudden but I was not surprised at all, to be perfectly honest I was somewhat too calm through everything..

It started out with recurrent lower back pain (daily to be precise) and it didn't go away after my trusty Synflex 275mg. I had a lump on my lower right abdomen for a while (more than a year maybe) but it wasn't very obvious, sometimes it goes away and it's mobile too (sometimes it moves to lower middle abdomen). I thought it was nothing but intestinal gas, and it usually was more prominent when I ate irregularly or have empty stomach. But end of May, I decided to go for a check-up since the back pain was always there (dull pain and uncomfortable) and I realized the lump was more prominent and seems to grow in size :S .

After check-up and whatnot, I was diagnosed with having 2 ovary cysts on my right and left abdomen. The right cysts was 10 x 7 x7 cm (quite huge, as I were told by a few doctors and nurses) and the left cysts was 7x4x4cm if I recall correctly. They suggested immediate surgery since it could rupture anytime and cause further complications. So, I called up my family and discussed with them. We decided to do the surgery back at my hometown in JB. The main reason was nobody to take care of me in KL. My sister is doing her intern at my mother's workplace and I have no other relatives in KL. The surgery is a major one and I'm expected to be bedridden for quite sometime. My appointment in Hospital Sultan Ismail in JB is on the 20th June, and so I wait patiently. With the referral from HUKM KL, I got through check-up easily (they only have to confirmed the cysts) and voila my surgery was scheduled on the 1st of July. On the 30th June, I check into the O & G Ward at HSI and waited patiently. It was ironic and funny, I had always wonder how it feels to be warded and I got my wish, icky. I asked to be warded in the second class ward and it was great. The room was really clean and toilets close by. I was roomed with 3 other patients one has a fibroid, another a cysts too and another lady was for minor post-natal surgery. We chat and I relaxed on my bed. The food was okay but being in the room was great. In this hot, sweltering heat I stayed in a full air-conditioned room. Ah, it was cooling. The experience of wearing the hospital dressing gown was unique in itself. It felt funny but the fabric was comfortable. My sister kept asking if she could take a picture and I refused.

That night, I was fasted and ready for the surgery next day. Some relatives ask me if I was afraid, and I say "Well, no use to be frightened. It has to go whether I like it or not. Better for it to go as soon as possible rather than later." At 1.45pm on the 1st July, I went into the operating room. I was still calm because I didn't want my surgery to be postponed due to stress or high blood pressure (well, your heart will beat faster if you are afraid). The operating room was really cold. I was shivering and clattering my teeth. After inhaling oxygen, the jab in the anesthetic and I fell into deep sleep. I didn't even realized when they woke me up to take out the breathing tube. I was in and out of consciousness after the surgery (I just barely see the post-operating hall). At 5.30pm I fully awake and asked the nurse by my side on the time. I can't believe I was in surgery and asleep that long, wow. And I thought the surgery only take one or two hours the most. Alhamdulillah, the surgery was a success and I didn't lose both my ovaries (didn't ask the doctor till way later haha). I was also lucky the stitches and the open surgery site didn't hurt much. Only the cyst removal site (the right side) throbs and ache once in a while. It seems they didn't only remove the cysts but also reconstruct the right ovary. I wondered what they actually do and silly me didn't even ask the doctor. I was hooked to a pain killer machine but it was actually morphine, didn't really remove the throb and ache, only made me real sleepy. I fell asleep midway talking to my mom and even the doctor. Everything went well for me and I was discharged two days after the surgery. Thank god for the removal or urine tube, that thing hurts and painful. I lost bladder control for a week after that. Disgusting really (having no control over your own bladder).

Today it is 27 days after the surgery and I am feeling healthier with each day. Some food are still banned for me and one part of the stitch still haven't fully recovered. My motto after the surgery is 'one day at a time'. I lie down most of the time and lounge usually. I haven't bend down for 27 days now and still needs help to get up from sitting or lying down. This hot weather doesn't help much either since I sweat a lot and causes the one spot of the stitches to get moist and sometimes bled a bit. I am on birth control pills and also menopause-like medication till December. I guess my family and bf have to accept the occasional mood swings and irritation XD . Other than that I feel great. Though I try to limit my movement (though sometimes I go out shopping), and take things slow. I lost 5kg after the surgery (the cysts were THAT heavy?!) and I hope to lose weight more. Not right now though, rigorous exercise is still a no-no at the moment. Maybe in September? Recuperating is nice but after weeks of lying down sure is boring. I can't wait to indulge in my sewing projects soon...........

Ramblings : Cloth!!

Cloth! Moar cloth! Crazy to train my skill, I started buying cotton cloth to make toddler's clothes. These are the cloth I have minus 2 which I didn't have with me when I took this picture.

Ahh, beautiful.. so beautiful. I can only imagine the projects I will do soon enough..

Can't wait to see what mix and match I will do in future. Though for the next project I'm eying the plain green and the polka-dots. I hope it will be fabulous! Just fabulous!

Project #3: My Baju Kurung

Well.. as usual, I have 1 or 2 pairs of Baju Kurung for Hari Raya. This year, my mom decided to just get 1 pair since we don't really go anywhere these days. We can finish visiting relatives in 1 day anyway :D.

At first mom told me to get ready-made Baju Kurung, I wondered if I could find my size but then she told me she bought 2 piece of cloth for my sister and herself for Hari Raya. She then told me to buy a length of cloth for myself for Hari Raya too. Lo and behold, when I bought the cloth the tailor already stopped taking orders. They managed to send theirs and so I am stuck to make my own. It's a beautiful white chiffon with pink roses with black border at the bottom. It came in 2 type of cloth, chiffon and satin. I decided to make the satin as the skirt (or the "kain" as we usually say it) and the chiffon as the top. Though it is very transparent, I guess I will need to make a camisole to match it.

Knowing the basic of sewing makes it easier, I drew the pattern from last year's Baju Kurung carefully and the align each pieces so it will fit nicely. Then I proceed to cut it carefully. I left 1/2" to 3/4" as the seam allowance since I'm worried I didn't cut it properly. There is also an issue of Serger stitching (some tailor cut a chunk of the cloth through the Serger machine). The tailoring shop I went cut just a bit of the cloth.

Next, the construction of the Baju Kurung. Which goes where and so forth. I starts with the "pesak" and the "kekek". Combine those two and then iron it out and keep it aside. Next is the main body. I had to join at the shoulder to have the beautiful border at the bottom. Then comes the tricky part of cutting out the neckline. It's quite tricky for an amateur like me because the chiffon is so soft and thin. I had to use a lot of pin needles and patience *laughs*. I decided to mark out the neckline and sew it first before cutting it out. The I turn it around and voila, the neckline. I decided to go the lazy way and use bias tape instead. The traditional way is to hand-sewn the neckline. Bahh.. I wear tudung anyway, who sees the intricate needlework anyway :P.

As I was finishing basting the neckline, I realized I had sewn the back part of the main body wrong side. Arghh.. the horror!!! I had to undo all the stitching and re-construct the main body. I was crying silently inside and calling myself all kind of idiot. After that, it was smooth sailing. I did mention I went the lazy way and machine stitch everything (the hem and whatnot). Voila, finally.. the finished product. Granted the picture is a bit dark and not very sharp (I took it on my mobile). But...here it is. It'll do for now. ;)

P/S : Oh my, how very transparent and huge. I need to diet.. ughhh..

Project #2 : Flower dress for a 4 years old.

My second project is to create / experiment sewing a dress for my 4 year old cousin. I haven't see her in a while but my mom took her measurement and I started the project as soon as I have nothing to do. Haha. She is rather thin and lanky and I hope this will fit her. I'm thinking of keeping it for a while and make a shirt for her brother and maybe a skirt / top and skirt for her older sister. We'll see how it goes.

After a few days of tracing pattern, cutting and sewing. I finally finished the project in hmm 3, 4 days? What took me long was the buttonhole. Ughh, I hate sewing those manually and was contemplating of changing it for something else but alas, nothing else was doable. I'm using an old straight "Raleigh" sewing machine which has been in the family since.. forever I guess. It still run smoothly and works like a dream. After sewing the buttonhole and buttons, here is the finish project:

Front of the dress

Back of the dress

Close up on buttons at the back. Only 1 goes through a buttonhole, the other is a mock button.

The bottom of the dress, this time I added a bit of lace and a small layer of ruffle (or pleats).

This dress would have been nicer if the base body is in plain color and the ruffles using prints. Sadly the plain cloth that I bought were of lower quality and a mix of polyester and cotton (more polyester than cotton) and were very transparent. It could be used as ruffles or bias but not as main structure of a dress, tunic or shirt.

Project #1 : summer dress for toddler / tunic for girls

Aha, I went to the local textile shop and bought myself some nice cloths. There was a huge discount for cotton cloth (remnant anyway) and I bought a few. They feel so nice and comfortable. Perfect for kids.
My first project is a summer dress for 9 months old baby. But as I complete the dress, I realized it could also be a tunic for older kids (3-5 years old). Well, seems my cousin could fit into it. I have to do a fitting someday (after I finished the combo). I used a small flower print cotton, a plain beige cloth (sadly this one is more polyester than cotton) and 2 packet of bias tape. Voila, the finish product:

Not bad eh? Thought I got the pattern from a book "Making baby clothes" for 9 months old baby, I kinda wondered if it could fit older toddler? It is American size, and I know for a fact that westerners children are larger than Asian children. The width of the chest is around 10 inches. Anyone with a 9 months toddler care to help me out? :D

Other angle of the dress / tunic.

Front of the dress / tunic.

The bottom, suppose to be ruffles but looked more like pleats to me.. Oh well..

The long bias tape / shoulder strap can be adjusted, so I guess it could fit other sizes? Hmm, it could be used for a long time I guess. It looks okay for a first project. Ahh, how I wish I have a toddler to wear this.. :(

Next project!

Hobby-ho!

Wow, it has been quite sometime since I plunge into sewing. I used to sew my own dress, skirts (though mostly weren't perfectly made :S ).

I had been thinking lately and decided to brush up my sewing skills. So, what do I do? I start small.. with my cat's costumes. Well, they are not the best models *laughs* and not to mention not many choices of clothes I can make (four legged is a challenge eh!). I decided to try my hands at toddler and children clothes.

Since I don't have any kids, and no small siblings, my mom told me to try and make a dress for my youngest cousin. Well, since I am experimenting and practicing, why not?

Let see if I can stay through and improve my skills.. tally - ho!
