Ramblings : Cloth!!

Cloth! Moar cloth! Crazy to train my skill, I started buying cotton cloth to make toddler's clothes. These are the cloth I have minus 2 which I didn't have with me when I took this picture.

Ahh, beautiful.. so beautiful. I can only imagine the projects I will do soon enough..

Can't wait to see what mix and match I will do in future. Though for the next project I'm eying the plain green and the polka-dots. I hope it will be fabulous! Just fabulous!

Project #3: My Baju Kurung

Well.. as usual, I have 1 or 2 pairs of Baju Kurung for Hari Raya. This year, my mom decided to just get 1 pair since we don't really go anywhere these days. We can finish visiting relatives in 1 day anyway :D.

At first mom told me to get ready-made Baju Kurung, I wondered if I could find my size but then she told me she bought 2 piece of cloth for my sister and herself for Hari Raya. She then told me to buy a length of cloth for myself for Hari Raya too. Lo and behold, when I bought the cloth the tailor already stopped taking orders. They managed to send theirs and so I am stuck to make my own. It's a beautiful white chiffon with pink roses with black border at the bottom. It came in 2 type of cloth, chiffon and satin. I decided to make the satin as the skirt (or the "kain" as we usually say it) and the chiffon as the top. Though it is very transparent, I guess I will need to make a camisole to match it.

Knowing the basic of sewing makes it easier, I drew the pattern from last year's Baju Kurung carefully and the align each pieces so it will fit nicely. Then I proceed to cut it carefully. I left 1/2" to 3/4" as the seam allowance since I'm worried I didn't cut it properly. There is also an issue of Serger stitching (some tailor cut a chunk of the cloth through the Serger machine). The tailoring shop I went cut just a bit of the cloth.

Next, the construction of the Baju Kurung. Which goes where and so forth. I starts with the "pesak" and the "kekek". Combine those two and then iron it out and keep it aside. Next is the main body. I had to join at the shoulder to have the beautiful border at the bottom. Then comes the tricky part of cutting out the neckline. It's quite tricky for an amateur like me because the chiffon is so soft and thin. I had to use a lot of pin needles and patience *laughs*. I decided to mark out the neckline and sew it first before cutting it out. The I turn it around and voila, the neckline. I decided to go the lazy way and use bias tape instead. The traditional way is to hand-sewn the neckline. Bahh.. I wear tudung anyway, who sees the intricate needlework anyway :P.

As I was finishing basting the neckline, I realized I had sewn the back part of the main body wrong side. Arghh.. the horror!!! I had to undo all the stitching and re-construct the main body. I was crying silently inside and calling myself all kind of idiot. After that, it was smooth sailing. I did mention I went the lazy way and machine stitch everything (the hem and whatnot). Voila, finally.. the finished product. Granted the picture is a bit dark and not very sharp (I took it on my mobile). But...here it is. It'll do for now. ;)

P/S : Oh my, how very transparent and huge. I need to diet.. ughhh..

Project #2 : Flower dress for a 4 years old.

My second project is to create / experiment sewing a dress for my 4 year old cousin. I haven't see her in a while but my mom took her measurement and I started the project as soon as I have nothing to do. Haha. She is rather thin and lanky and I hope this will fit her. I'm thinking of keeping it for a while and make a shirt for her brother and maybe a skirt / top and skirt for her older sister. We'll see how it goes.

After a few days of tracing pattern, cutting and sewing. I finally finished the project in hmm 3, 4 days? What took me long was the buttonhole. Ughh, I hate sewing those manually and was contemplating of changing it for something else but alas, nothing else was doable. I'm using an old straight "Raleigh" sewing machine which has been in the family since.. forever I guess. It still run smoothly and works like a dream. After sewing the buttonhole and buttons, here is the finish project:

Front of the dress

Back of the dress

Close up on buttons at the back. Only 1 goes through a buttonhole, the other is a mock button.

The bottom of the dress, this time I added a bit of lace and a small layer of ruffle (or pleats).

This dress would have been nicer if the base body is in plain color and the ruffles using prints. Sadly the plain cloth that I bought were of lower quality and a mix of polyester and cotton (more polyester than cotton) and were very transparent. It could be used as ruffles or bias but not as main structure of a dress, tunic or shirt.

Project #1 : summer dress for toddler / tunic for girls

Aha, I went to the local textile shop and bought myself some nice cloths. There was a huge discount for cotton cloth (remnant anyway) and I bought a few. They feel so nice and comfortable. Perfect for kids.
My first project is a summer dress for 9 months old baby. But as I complete the dress, I realized it could also be a tunic for older kids (3-5 years old). Well, seems my cousin could fit into it. I have to do a fitting someday (after I finished the combo). I used a small flower print cotton, a plain beige cloth (sadly this one is more polyester than cotton) and 2 packet of bias tape. Voila, the finish product:

Not bad eh? Thought I got the pattern from a book "Making baby clothes" for 9 months old baby, I kinda wondered if it could fit older toddler? It is American size, and I know for a fact that westerners children are larger than Asian children. The width of the chest is around 10 inches. Anyone with a 9 months toddler care to help me out? :D

Other angle of the dress / tunic.

Front of the dress / tunic.

The bottom, suppose to be ruffles but looked more like pleats to me.. Oh well..

The long bias tape / shoulder strap can be adjusted, so I guess it could fit other sizes? Hmm, it could be used for a long time I guess. It looks okay for a first project. Ahh, how I wish I have a toddler to wear this.. :(

Next project!

Hobby-ho!

Wow, it has been quite sometime since I plunge into sewing. I used to sew my own dress, skirts (though mostly weren't perfectly made :S ).

I had been thinking lately and decided to brush up my sewing skills. So, what do I do? I start small.. with my cat's costumes. Well, they are not the best models *laughs* and not to mention not many choices of clothes I can make (four legged is a challenge eh!). I decided to try my hands at toddler and children clothes.

Since I don't have any kids, and no small siblings, my mom told me to try and make a dress for my youngest cousin. Well, since I am experimenting and practicing, why not?

Let see if I can stay through and improve my skills.. tally - ho!
